Premier of Trees Eat Us All featuring Hugo The Poet!
What happens when you cross a permie electro-funk band with a performance poet? Great things!
Formidable Vegetable Sound System took their Tree Eat Us All tribute to the late, great Bill Mollison and merged it with a fine rap from Hugo.
We asked Charlie from Formidable Veg how the original song came about:
"I never met Bill personally, but a couple of weeks before he died, I recieved word from his daughter, Fran that he'd been laughing and singing along to the Formidable Vegetable CDs I'd sent him a few months earlier. This was truly humbling to hear and when he began his journey into compost, I figured the least I could do to honour this man's life was to write a song for him (with emphasis on his famous dislike of lawn). Thanks for getting this Permaculture ball rolling, Bill."
Then we asked Hugo the poet, the man who has rapped alongside Noam Chomsky, Julian Assange and Scott Ludlam, what inspired him!
"When Charlie showed me his original song for Bill, with a view to us collaborating, I was blown away by the lyricism - it's top notch songwriterly stuff, and really a very tasteful fitting tribute to the man. I knew that in order to complement that, I'd have to come up with an angle for my verses that took it in a different direction, so that we didn't just retread the same ground too much.
"That's how the idea of addressing all the passengers of Spaceship Earth came about - we're all on this unique Spacecraft planet together, and one of our most important captains has left us... but the voyage continues, and we now have to take charge.
"It was a great project to work on - collaborating with Charlie was awesome, and Kylie's violin is divine... and thanks to this I got to realise a long-held dream of doing a song with the legend Mal Webb."
