Maddy describes how to make a simple and safe fire pit from a truck wheel.

Hidden down in the woods at The Sustainability Centre is a lovely little handmade building that was built from sawmill waste by kids with a little help from Sean Reeves, one of the Centre's bushcraft and outdoor learning specialists. Inside the building is such a clever and replicable idea that I must share it with you.

Credit: Penny RoseDo you want to make a firepit that is contained and safe and even reflects heat on cold evenings? Look no further than a discarded metal wheel of an old truck. Sink it up to its rim in the ground slightly below the surface and then surround it with rocks at that level. You can buy them from builder's merchants but better still find them if you can. Do not use flint as it explodes when hot. Add another circle slightly proud of ground level to stop the soil or woodchip in our case falling into the hole.

Light a fire and enjoy the space.

You can always scale this up by acquiring an old tractor wheel too.

The Sustainability Centre is based in the South Downs National Park in Hampshire in its own 55 acres in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It offers courses for childen and adults on a variety of subjects, invites schools and group to the centre and has campcraft sleepouts, an eco-campsite and an eco-hostel.
