An introduction for the new woodland owner written by experts in a friendly style, dealing with basic issues from site boundaries, site access, to how you want to manage it. The headings and sub-headings tend to be questions, with the text giving answers or explanations.
At the back is a useful glossary, list of acronyms and abbreviations, notes on common species, organisations to join or consult etc. Throughout, the importance of management is stressed, whatever the new owner’s primary objective might be, and the authors have done a good job in showing that getting started in woodland management is not necessarily as daunting or complicated as it may at first appear.
The enthusiasm of the authors for their subject comes through, alongside the pleasure that they have had from their woods, and their desire that others may get similar enjoyment. That surely must be part of what the Independent Panel for Forestry in England meant when it stressed the need to see a new woodland culture in which woodlands and wood as a material and fuel are highly valued and sought after.
